Inheriting a firearm is more common than you might think. As the older generations age, families need to decide what to do with their deceased relatives’ firearms: Distribute them among family members? Sell some of them to cover estate expenses? Sell them all?

Federal and state laws must be followed, so contact Paladin Professional LLC immediately. We will help you secure the estate's firearms and ensure that they are safe for the next steps.

Here’s a quick list of DO's and DON'T's to consider when you find out that a deceased relative has guns in their estate:

DON'T:

  1. DON'T handle an unfamiliar firearm, even to confirm whether it is loaded. Attempting to operate an unfamiliar firearm's action increases your chance for an accidental discharge.
  2. DON'T take firearms to the police department (unless required by law). Educate yourself on that department's policy on "firearm safekeeping" Some departments will ONLY accept firearms for destruction.  If a department accepts firearms for temporary safekeeping, know that damage can occur while in their possession, possibly hurting the firearms' value.
  3. DO NOT bring a firearm to a police station without scheduling an appointment with the department. Upon arrival, call the station to advise them that you are in the parking lot. It's a bad idea to enter a police station and announce "I have a gun!"

DO:

  • Contact Paladin Professional LLC. We will travel to the estate's location to ensure that each firearm is safe and unloaded. We will discuss the immediate options for the estate, and assess the current storage or disposal options.  This is a FREE service (subject to distance).
  • Ask us to photograph and document each firearm's make, model, serial number, and condition. This ensures that there is no confusion about what items are in the collection.
  • Consider our assessment on the current legality of the firearms. We will discuss the conditions under which the firearms can be owned, and we will flag any firearms that appear to be in violation of current Federal or state laws.
  • Ask us to provide a written replacement value appraisal for the firearms ESPECIALLY if if the collection is large or includes antiques.  Establishing each item’s value may be critical during estate & probate processes. We can provide appraisal samples and a quote on request.
  • Consider our recommendations for storage.  If the current storage environment is not sufficient (unsecured, unmonitored, damp, home is being sold, etc.) we will recommend options to safely hold, or otherwise legally store the collection.
